ETIAS 2026: Current Launch Status, €20 Fee and Travel Checklist

Quick answer

ETIAS is planned for the last quarter of 2026, but the EU currently says travellers do not need to take action. The application fee will be €20. Do not pay an unofficial site or assume applications are open.

Facts checked: 8 October 2026. Rules and availability can change.

What is confirmed, and what is not

The official EU portal still gives a Q4 2026 launch window, rather than a confirmed date on which every traveller must apply. Earlier versions of our guides gave conflicting fees and unsupported claims about a 2027 delay; this consolidated article replaces them.

An expected launch window is different from an operational requirement. Before a trip, check whether the official portal actually accepts applications and what transition arrangements apply. A search result or an old article is not sufficient evidence that you need an authorisation today.

Who will need it and how much it costs

ETIAS is a travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt visitors, not a replacement for a visa or residence permit. Eligibility depends on your passport and status. The official fee is €20; applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt, as are qualifying family members of EU nationals. Read the EU eligibility guidance for your circumstances.

Prepare documents without paying early

  • Check your passport against the EU requirements: it must not be older than 10 years and should remain valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure.
  • Use the official portal to establish whether applications are required for your travel date.
  • When applications open, enter the passport details you will actually use.
  • Keep accommodation and onward-travel evidence available if requested at the border.

Do not confuse ETIAS with the Entry/Exit System: they serve different purposes. Having an authorisation also does not guarantee admission. Border officials make the final entry decision.

Common questions

Should I apply now?

The official EU portal currently says no action is required. Follow its current instructions instead of paying a third party.

Does ETIAS extend the permitted visit?

No. Do not treat a travel authorisation as permission to exceed the applicable short-stay limit or to work.
