Thailand Visa Exemption 2026: Stay Length and Entry Checklist
Thailand changed its visa-exemption framework from 15 September 2026. Many eligible passports receive up to 30 days for tourism, but the entitlement is not identical for every nationality. Check your passport against an official embassy list.
Facts checked: 8 October 2026. Rules and availability can change.
Check your passport, not just the headline
The revised framework replaced the general 60-day measure. Separate bilateral arrangements and other entry categories can have different limits, including 90, 30, 15 or 14 days. Do not assume that a rule quoted for a British passport applies to your own passport.
Use the Tourism Authority of Thailand announcement and your nearest Thai embassy to confirm the correct category. The London embassy explicitly lists British and Irish passport holders among those eligible for 30 days for tourism.
Before departure
- Confirm passport validity and eligibility directly with the Thai embassy handling your nationality.
- Check onward-travel and funds requirements before buying a one-way ticket.
- Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card through the official immigration service according to its submission window.
- If your planned stay exceeds your entitlement, check the appropriate visa before departure.
Do not pay an intermediary simply because a website resembles an official arrival-card service. Use the immigration domain and confirm the form details before submitting passport information.
Your entry stamp controls your stay
Check the permitted-until date stamped or recorded on arrival. Travellers admitted before the change should follow the permission already granted, rather than calculating a new limit from a headline. If the date looks wrong, ask an immigration officer before leaving the arrivals area.
An extension is a separate decision; it is not an automatic extra month included with every visa-free entry. Get current instructions from immigration, allow time for an application, and do not plan an overstay or repeated border trips as a substitute for the correct visa.
Practical booking decision
For a holiday that fits comfortably inside your confirmed allowance, visa exemption can simplify the trip. For a longer journey, arrange the appropriate permission first, then book transport. When comparing flights, consider the cost of changing the return date if your immigration permission differs from your plan.
This guide is for tourism planning. Work, study and residence require their own checks and should not be inferred from tourist-entry privileges.
