Japan Tourist Tax 2026: Departure Charge and What to Check
Japan’s international tourist tax is generally ¥3,000 per departure. Eligible tickets issued on or before 30 June 2026 can qualify for the previous ¥1,000 rate. It is a departure charge, not a nationality-specific visa fee.
Facts checked: 8 October 2026. Rules and availability can change.
What the charge covers
Japan’s National Tax Agency states that the tax applies to international departures by aircraft or ship regardless of nationality or purpose, subject to exemptions. Airlines and shipping companies usually collect it through the ticket. Check the itemised fare before assuming you need to pay a separate airport fee.
Check transitional treatment and exemptions
Certain tickets issued by 30 June 2026 remain eligible for the old rate. The tax agency also lists exemptions, including passengers under two and qualifying transit passengers leaving within 24 hours after entry. Do not assume every stopover qualifies: check the official conditions and ask the carrier how your ticket is treated.
Keep departure tax separate from other costs
| Charge | What to check |
|---|---|
| International departure tax | Itemised ticket and any transitional treatment |
| Visa fees | Your passport, visa type and the responsible consulate |
| Accommodation or local visitor taxes | The accommodation’s total and the local authority’s current rules |
These are separate charges. A national departure-tax change does not prove a particular hotel tax, visa fee or admission price has changed. Avoid adding the same departure tax twice when comparing two fares.
A simple budgeting checklist
- Compare flights using the final total, not the first displayed base fare.
- Save the itemised booking confirmation.
- If using a transitional ticket, ask the issuing airline which rate was applied.
- Keep a small contingency for exchange-rate movements and optional baggage.
If two travel sites show different totals, first compare taxes, bags and ticket conditions. The lower initial price is not necessarily the lower payable amount. Choose an itinerary you can manage, particularly if connections are sold on separate tickets.
